You can go to CPALMS to downlaod standards or course descriptions.  When downloading standards, be sure to choose the CCSS: Language Arts (not the NGSSS).

When downloading course descriptions, be sure to choose the descriptions for 2013 - beyond that use the Common Core State Standards.

Creating Thematic Units

This PowerPoint is based on SREB's approach to creating a standards-based thematic unit with high student interest and rigor.

Secondary Pacing Guides

Last summer a team of teachers, coaches, and specialists from both Reading and Language Arts classes converged in the media center of Woodham Middle School for 3 days with the goal of creating new pacing guides that are based on the recently released ourse descriptions that are algined to the Common Core State Standards.

We also incorporated the Social Studies pacing guides for each grade level but 9th and 12th grades.  The goal was to build as many points of intersection between the two class as possible for each student so that the learning can be supported across curriclum in Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies classes.

The result was a yearly pacing guide for each grade level that explores different theme for each grading period.  Each grading period also has a skills focus for reading, writing, and speaking and listening to give teachers an anchor for their learning goals.

For many teachers these pacing guides will be a drastic departure from what has been done in the past.  Please bear in mind that the changes that were made were done to support student learning and facilitate greater teacher collaboration in the interests of supporting our students.  This pacing guide will be the building block for future pacing guides that will be built around the new English Language Arts series that we adopt this fall.
