Pensacola High School's Science Olympiad Team’s 2021 Regional and State Results

In the midst of a pandemic the Science Olympiad STEM Competition forged ahead this year - virtually.  Pensacola High School stayed the course of our annual presence at the Eastern Regional Science Olympiad Competition and then qualified to compete at the State of Florida Science Olympiad. 

 

At the Eastern Regional Satellite Competition, held on Feb. 20, 2021, the Science Olympiad team from Pensacola High School, placed 5th out of 25 teams and moved ahead to state on Mar. 27.   

 

“It takes a collective effort of every team member to qualify to state,” explained their coach and sponsor, Cheri Stephens. “They also took medals in 6 events at Regionals.”

 

The winners at this year's Regional Competition were:

 

Fossils Test, 3rd place - Victoria Greene

 

Build Event, Boomilever, 2nd place - Victoria Greene and Deanna Harwell

 

Wright Stuff, 3rd place - Andy Tran and Kathryn Tran

 

Ping Pong Parachute, 2nd place - Emily Wagner and Declan McGurk

 

Machines, 3rd place - Declan McGurk and James Hu

 

Gravity Vehicle, 3rd place - Nicholas Mistry and Ian Tsubooka

 

On March 27, the PHS team of 15 students, competed against 57 teams in a virtual State Science Olympiad. Congratulations go to Declan McGurk and James Hu who took 5th place in the state in the Machines competition.

 

“The entire team is to be commended for their tenacity,” said Stephens. “They didn’t let the pandemic slow them down at all.”
